Paroxysmal dysphasia and the problem of cerebral dominance.

چکیده
The problem of the functional specialization of the two cerebral hemispheres has its origin in studies of aphasia. In a report which received little attention at the time, Marc Dax maintained (1836) that aphasia was associated with lesions of the left hemisphere. Broca admitted in his earlier writings that both hemispheres might be involved in language functions but in his later observations he insisted that the left hemisphere was dominant for this function. This suggestion was soon confirmed by the observations of Bastian, Hughlings Jackson, and Wernicke. However, exceptions to this rulewere soon noticed. In fact, as from 1865, Broca conceded that there might be a small number of individuals " who were exceptions and would speak with the right hemisphere ", and he approached present-day explanations when he wrote:

Epileptology in Czech Republic Epileptiform activity in children with developmental dysphasia: quantification of discharges in overnight sleep video-EEG
We present results of analysis of overnight sleep video-EEG in 8 patients with developmental dysphasia and rolandic discharges. We evaluated the incidence of epileptiform discharges (expressed as paroxysmal activity density) at one or more electrodes in different sleep stages in three different periods of the night (after falling asleep, around midnight and before awakening). The difference of ...
متن کامل[Developmental dysphasia and epileptiform EEG activity in children].
Objective. To study the electrical activity of the brain in children with developmental dysphasia (alalia). Material and methods. We analyzed the EEGs of 65 children with developmental dysphasia, including 48 boys and 17 girls, aged from 3 to 4 years 11 months. General speech underdevelopment (GSU) of the 1st level (with active vocabulary less than 15-20 words) was found in 31 children and GSU ...

متن کاملMultiple sclerosis or multiphasic disseminated encephalomyelitis? A new question about an old problem. Case report.
A 42 year-old woman developed paraplegia that resolved in six months, followed by sudden right hemiparesis and dysphasia two years later. The clinical work-up, including CT and MR scans, visual evoked potential, CSF examination and cerebral biopsy suggested the possibility of either multiple sclerosis or multiphasic disseminated encephalomyelitis. The differential diagnosis between both conditi...
متن کاملCortical auditory evoked potentials in children with developmental dysphasia.
Like all auditory evoked potentials, the cortical auditory evoked potentials are nonspecific for the disease, but they provide information about the auditory system function. It appears that the cortical auditory potentials can be used to study the disorders of speech comprehension and their pathology is related to the role of the temporal processing of the auditory stimuli. Cortical auditory p...
